Well worth checking out especially if you like Cambodian music infused with western and done with local humility; emerging Cambodian Singer Sochi has released her 3rd single on 10th September 2020 titled Çheap Charlie. Last year Sochi released her debut single Lazy Husband Blues, followed by Honey in the Jungle in January.
Music taste like food. I am happy to sing when the music come to me. Has place in my heart. Music happy singing! – Sochi
Released on Thursday 10th Sept 2020 and banned the same day, today sees the re-release of Sochi’s Cheap Charlie. The owner of one of the locations the music video was filmed at sought for the removal of the released video out of concerns it would harm their business reputation as they consider the video to be disrespectful and about ‘money love’.
Some people confuse the theme of the song with “money love” or prostitution… but it only shows the struggles and dreams of a Cambodian woman and her expectations in a partnership with a foreign man…. seen with lot of humour…. shot with loads of laughs, excellent hilarious actors and extras – Prof Kinski
The accompanying video produced by Prof Kinski (Jan Mueller – Dub Addiction / The Schkoots) is highly amusing, features many familiar faces from the Phnom Pehn nightlife scene including country singer Clay George. It looks like the production team would have spent more time laughing than making the music video
